My tryst with analytics began in circa 2004 at Shekhar Academy. Mr. JB Mall had taken the mantle of mentoring a bunch of us students to decode defense psych when he was invited to conduct sessions at HRDC Cantt, Lucknow. Back then, I felt analytics was a combination of hypothetical observations and conclusive interpretation – not more than a function of human interaction.
I’d always been very fond of tech, and I was the designated data guy of my group since 2007. I started with developing database applications, then leaped onto data products, and later forayed into data science and analytics. When I started managing data science groups, I found my role as an amalgamation of characters: like a chief articulator who talks to platform architecture, works with product management and interacts with business users to solve a problem by designing AI solutions for the business. What excites me most is the fact that I get to make an impact every single day. Over time, I have become a firm advocate of product design as it regulates the ever-evolving artificial intelligence and keeps a check on adoption metrics. I strongly believe that computer vision, deep learning, and natural language processing will come up as the top trends in the next three-to-five years with comprehensive use cases. I wouldn’t be surprised to know that machine learning will gradually turn into a commodity skill among data scientists.
Despite data being my first love, I actively pursued my passion for writing as well and published three technical books with Packt (2012, 2016) and Apress (2018). While the first two works were on Oracle Database PL/SQL Development, the last one was on designing robust data lakes, and I co-authored this with V.Giri. It’s satisfying to read responses from my reader base, and it motivates me to do more.
While the future of AI intrigues me to no end, I ponder over just how artificial will this intelligence be and whether we will be able to demarcate the line between humans and AI?
